Teaching Groups and Curriculum |
|
In Year 7 students are taught in small mixed ability groups. The topic is Galileo and the children are set the task of investigating the life of Galileo and what his contribution to maths was. We think this helps bridge the gap between learning styles at primary and secondary level. Students are placed in suitable streams at the end of this project.
Throughout the rest of the school students are taught in 4 or 5 groups according to their level or grade. Each student is carefully tracked throughout the year by regular formal assessments and they are made aware of their target so they can continue to achieve to the best of their ability.Â
Key Stage 3 Course All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 follow the Key Stage 3 Numeracy Strategy. The strategy is divided into 4 sections:
- Mathematical Processes and Applications
- Number and algebra
- Geometry and Measures
- Data Handling

Key Stage 4 Course All pupils follow a Modular GCSE course from the exam board Edexcel. The course covers the same 4 sections as Key Stage 3 but is examined at 2 different tiers, Higher and Foundation Tier.
- Unit 1 (Data Handling) is taught and examined in November of Year 10, with a re-sit available in March of Year 10. (Worth 20%)
- Unit 2 is taught in Year 10 and examined in March of year 10 with a re-sit available in June. (Worth 30%)
- Unit 2 has 2 stages, 1 is a non calculator multiple choice test and the other is a traditional calculator question paper.
- The final examination at the end of Year 11 is worth 50%.
