A careers programme is taught to all pupils in Years 10 and 11. The school has close relationships with Connexions, the Careers Service, who visit the school regularly and interview pupils about their future plans. Pupils are prepared career decisions beginning in year 9 with the Options Choices and this continues throughout years 10 and 11 with Work Experience and Careers visits.
We have a close relationship with St.Mary’s Catholic 6th Form College who visit school to talk to pupils and also attend Parents Evenings. We see St.Marys College as our natural post 16 provider and encourage pupils and parents to read their prospectus and visit their open evening. |

Work Experience - Aim and Objectives |
|
The Work Experience Programme is designed to give students a taste of the world of work and to help with their move from school to adult life. It can have many benefits for students including;
- Introducing them to the knowledge and skills that future employers will look for.
- Preparing them for the world of work by developing their employability skills.
- Gaining an understanding of how their school curriculum relates to the workplace.
- Learning about the attitudes expected in the workplace, including punctuality, reliability and good time keeping/attendance.

How is Work Experience organised? |
|
Work Experience is organised by the school and Tees Valley EBP (A4e) in partnership with local employers. This partnership is essential in making the programme a success.
Placements come from a number of different sources:
- Via the Tees Valley EBP employer database — which is accessed from the school; all employers on the database have been Health and Safety vetted.
- Red Top Placements — These are placements offered by a numbers of employers on a pre-allocated basis; i.e. they allocate a number of placements to schools each year on the understanding that only Tees Valley EBP will contact them.
Students need to speak to the Work Experience Coordinator in school to find out what is available through this system.     Students can also obtain a list detailing which companies are in the Red Top system, so they are aware of who they should not contact.
- Family contacts and students who find their own placement.
|
|
Please be aware that some types of placements are limited and as a number of schools may be undertaking their work experience at the same time, there can be a lot of competition for placements. Students therefore may not get their first choice, which can be disappointing for them. However there will be other opportunities made available to them. These may not be in their chosen area of interest but as Work Experience is about broadening understanding of work in general and is not intended as training for a particular job, then these other opportunities will still be valuable and rewarding. |
- Help your son/daughter prepare for their placement by encouraging them.
To complete the necessary paperwork on time;     To arrange an interview with the company or introduce themselves by letter or a phone call.
- Encourage punctuality and appropriate dress.
- Take an interest in Work Experience and discuss what has happened each day.
- Contact the school if there are any difficulties with the placement, which your son/daughter cannot resolve themselves.
- Encourage early nights!
- Remember that most students, only get one chance of taking up a Work
Experience placement and a good employers report and completed Work      Experience Portfolio are very important parts of the Record of Achievement/ Progress File.
- Inform the placement and the school if your son/daughter is unable to attend or there is a real emergency.
